Hertfordshire removal services – Asking Your Friends to Help You Move

Hertfordshire removal services – Asking Your Friends to Help You Move

We’ve all been there at some point: you’re surrounded by a pile of boxes while preparing for a big move, thinking how nice it would be to have some assistance. Whether it’s a long-distance move or just a few houses down the street, you’re probably contemplating asking friends for moving help.

Moving is a daunting task, and few people enjoy the process. If you’re thinking about rallying some of your friends to help alleviate the stress and save money, here are some tips to make the request successful.

DO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT’S A BIG ASK

No one likes moving. It’s a fact we’ve come to accept, yet we all end up doing it at some point (or many). However, before you beg your friends and family for a helping hand, make it known that their help in your moving venture is appreciated! Your true friends will likely say yes and show up to assist, but it goes a long way to make sure they’re aware of how much it means to you.

DO PLAN AHEAD

What’s worse than being asked to help a friend move a heavy couch up four flights of stairs? Being asked to do it the morning of moving day. If you’re going to need a hand (or two) for your big move, make sure to give your friends a generous heads-up. Even if you’re just looking to borrow a vehicle to help transport larger items, a timely notice still applies. This will help the whole moving process go smoothly and give you time to get things organised before the day comes.

DON’T BE A BAD HOST

The last thing on your mind before a move is a trip to the grocery store; that said, do be sure to have snacks and beverages for your moving helpers. If you’re going to be lifting boxes, cleaning and organising all day, it’s important to keep your friends and family properly fed and hydrated. Remember to have some water, refreshments and healthy snacks on hand to keep you and your moving crew energised!

DON’T FORGET A GAME PLAN

It’s moving day! After asking friends for moving help, get your ducks in a row and make sure you have a plan of attack before they arrive with their sleeves rolled up. Do you need a hand organising boxes of delicate china, cleaning out your crawl space or loading heavy furniture in the back of a truck?

Come up with a plan so that when your help arrives, everyone knows what to do and where to be. Additionally, try to keep the natural tendency to over-delegate at bay. Your crew will appreciate some direction, but no one wants to be bossed around during a stressful day.

DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER

Sometimes, no matter how kindly you ask (or beg) there might not be any takers for moving help. Schedules are busy, and life gets in the way; however, you don’t have to do it all alone. If you find yourself needing to hire professionals, Alban City Remvals has you covered. Our professional movers will help you make your new transition smooth and stress-free. Contact us today! Removal Services in Stevenage - Four Easy Tips For Packing Fragile Items

Removal Services in Stevenage – Four Easy Tips For Packing Fragile Items

Ever since I moved houses and broke a beautiful antique washbasin, I’ve become a patient person when it comes to moving! It was a lovely Delft Blue basin that had been in my family for years, and I eventually tired of looking at that sad, grey-gluey scar running the length of that gorgeous porcelain and had to dispose of the piece. Preventing these moving tragedies is just a matter of adequate preparation and having the right tools.

Here are our easy tips to pack up your fragile items and keep them safe:

1. Prepare in advance. Packing up the valuable crystal, porcelain, and other breakables requires some time. This is not the place to rush. If you are not hiring movers, start well in advance of moving day and take the time to properly pack these items and decide if they’ll go in the moving truck or by car.

2. Have the right tools. Here’s what you need: quality moving boxes in various sizes; packing paper, bubble wrap, pliable cardboard, scissors, and packing tape. A large table to lay out your items and pack on is also an essential tool. For larger items, you might need an extra pair of hands.

3. Label it! Having the boxes with your delicate items clearly labelled as “fragile” will help your movers handle them more carefully, as well as help when unpacking and organising at your new place.

4. Know what items you will be packing and how to pack them properly. A flat-screen TV and your grandma’s china are both fragile items, but quite different when it comes to packing. Do your research on the best way to pack each item, and plan so you’re not caught short of bubble wrap on moving day.

How to pack the most popular fragile items:

‍Plates – plates should be packed vertically in small to medium boxes lined with crumpled packing paper on the bottom and top. Wrap each plate in bubble wrap and secure it with tape. Place the paper between the standing plates. Do not overpack the box. Alban City Removals has dish packs available for purchase, whether hiring our packing service or doing it yourself.

Glasses – wrap glasses individually with packing paper and place crumpled paper inside the large pieces to diminish empty space. Line small or medium boxes with ample packing paper, top and bottom. Layer spaces around glasses with paper as well, reducing as much as possible the chance of the items moving inside the box. Place the heaviest items on the bottom of the box, with lighter pieces on top.

Lamps – lamp shades should be boxed (flat side down) separately with lots of paper. Bases can be placed in a large box if necessary, and bubble wrap used where appropriate.

Pictures/Frames – picture frames should be placed in paper-lined small to medium boxes, and standing if larger than 8 inches, with crumpled paper in between each piece. Wrap frames in packing paper. Top frames with more packing paper to ensure items don’t move around in the box. When moving paintings and pictures that are over 3 feet in size, they should be secured with a moving blanket, plastic-wrapped, and moved separately.

TVs – flat-screen TVs can be tricky to pack. Start by removing any cables and accessories (such as the stand legs), and make sure to pack those in a clearly labelled box. Wrap the screen in a soft moving blanket, securing it all around the device with packing tape. Lastly, place it inside the box, and close it with tape. Make sure that the box is the correct size for your TV.

‍Speciality items – here is the way I should have packed my family’s antique wash basin, and this can be applied to all oddly-shaped, large, fragile items. It’s important to consider the shape and size of the piece, as well as any handles or protruding pieces that could break easily. Wrap the piece completely in bubble wrap, securing with tape. Place it on one piece of pliable, cut cardboard. Place an identical piece of cardboard on top of the item. Then bend the cardboard ends to meet and secure with tape.

Don’t be shy with the tape. Wrap the entire piece with tape if necessary. You want the fragile item snug and stable. Then place the piece in a paper-lined box that’s roughly the same size as the object, placing the crumpled paper in any gaps. Lastly, tape up the box securely and mark in bold felt marker: FRAGILE.

Many people use old towels, small blankets, newsprint, or even paper towels to wrap their fragile items. These are not wise choices. Newsprint can be dirty and means you have even more washing to do in your new home. Paper towels are not strong or reliable. Old towels slip easily and cannot be secured with tape, which is essential for proper packing of valuables. Please invest in the proper tools, and you won’t be sorry.

Finally, be sure to let your movers know which boxes contain fragile items. Most moving companies carry specialised boxes for fragile items, such as the dish packs and mirror/picture frame packs that Alban City Removals keeps in stock.

If you are at all unsure about your packing skills, ask for help. Alban City Removals offers professional packing services. Contact your local movers today to request an estimate.

Happy Moving!

Removals in Hertfordshire - Make Moving Less Stressful

Removals in Hertfordshire – Make Moving Less Stressful

Removals in Hertfordshire – Make Moving Less Stressful

1. Accept that stress is a normal part of the moving process

The first step to overcoming moving stress is acceptance. If you acknowledge that you are probably going to incur some stress throughout your move, you’re less likely to let it set you back when it happens. You will be prepared for it.

Think about it like this: stress is a natural human response to a demanding circumstance. However, you have a say in how you react to that stress. You can take it as something negative and have a bad time. Or you can work your way through it and accomplish great things.

Hertfordshire Removals

Our best advice is to take the stress for what it is and acknowledge the feeling. That way, you can work with it instead of being controlled by it. The most important thing is to recognise the stress without letting it deter you from the tasks at hand.

2. Stay organised!

Something that will help you a lot before, during, and after your move is to be organised every step of the way! For this, a list will be a very good ally.

There are a lot of things you have to do before, during, and after a move. Keeping all of this only in your head could lead to extra stress and forgetting some details. So, to reduce stress and minimise forgetfulness, writing everything down will make a big difference!

There are many resources on the internet that can help you. You can check out packing checklists or moving checklists to get some inspiration.

3. Honour the journey, all of it

Moving is also a heavily emotional process. Apart from all the things you have to do, moving means a lot of change will come to your life. You leave things behind, and you meet new people. This can generate both stress and excitement. So, honour that process and live the journey fully.

Removal Companies Hertfordshire

Things that can help ease your stress are to research your new town, neighbourhood or city. Don’t focus only on what you are leaving behind and how that makes you sad. You can also look forward to all the new, cool things awaiting you!

4. Try to keep a positive mindset

Keeping a positive mindset makes a big difference in every aspect of your life, not just moving! Science has shown that positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health.

So while you face the stress generated by your upcoming move, remember to see it in a positive light. Embrace it, accept it, be patient with yourself. And try to see the bright side of things. This will make a difference for the better.

It is also very important to look for support from friends and family instead of dealing with everything by yourself. Speaking with others will help you keep your feet grounded and not get carried away by the stress.

Man With Van Hertfordshire

5. Reduce clutter as much as possible

Clutter is stressful. So to reduce the visual stress created by clutter, try to minimise the junk that’s occupying extra space in your home. You will feel more relieved almost immediately. You can clear the clutter using the Marie Kondo method or simply by organising things into three piles: sell, donate, and throw away.

This will also help you a lot with moving because you will have fewer things to worry about. You can even look at moving as an opportunity to declutter. Remember how we talked about trying to keep a positive mindset? Well, how you approach organising and decluttering can make a big difference.

Oh, and another pro tip? Unpack in your new location as soon as you can. This will help you avoid things piling up.

moving walkthrough

Do I need to do a final moving walkthrough ?

The primary purpose of a final walkthrough is to make certain that the property is in the condition in which you agreed to buy it, including whether agreed-on repairs, if any, were made, and that nothing has gone wrong with the home since you last looked at it.

What to Check During a Final Walkthrough:

  • Turn on and off every light fixture
  • Test all appliances
  • Check garage door openers
  • Flush toilets
  • Run the garbage disposal and exhaust fans
  • Test the heating and air conditioning
  • Make sure all debris is removed from the home
The big moving day checklist is almost finally here! Likely, you are probably feeling a mix of emotions from anxiety and excitement through.

One Week to Moving Day Checklist

The big moving day is almost finally here! Likely, you are probably feeling a mix of emotions from anxiety and excitement through to impatience for the day to arrive. You’re probably running on little sleep too, so don’t pack the coffee machine into the removal box just yet.

Here are some last-minute jobs you may have overlooked that are essential to make the move as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Confirm with your movers

Things are likely to have been pretty crazy lately, but nothing would be worse than waiting for a removalist van that never arrives. So whether you have friends and family helping, using professionals or both, make sure you check in to reconfirm the time and date of the move.

Last-minute logistics

Here is a list of the essential – and some not so obvious – tasks that need ticking off before you close the front door on your old home forever.

  • Head to the post office and arrange for your mail to be redirected.
  • Cancel or rearrange any regular domestic services such as a gardener or cleaner.
  • Cleaning the house for the next occupants is not just good manners, but often a legal requirement. You may want to book a professional for this job.
  • Check all necessary repairs and alterations to your old home will be finished by moving day, such as painting and laying carpets.
  • If you are moving out of an apartment, let your neighbours know of the date and apologise for any disruptions you may cause. An easy way is to put up a message on a notice board.
  • You may also be required to cover the inside of lifts when moving in or out of an apartment. Simply check with your body corporate.
  • Cancel any subscriptions, such as a newspaper delivery
  • Back up your computer – you may even want to do this on more than one device or storage system.
  • Pack yourself a moving day survival kit (see below).

If you have the energy

Hold a ‘house cooling’ party to say goodbye to the neighbours … plus it’s a great way to finish off any food in the pantry and freezer.

Surviving moving day

You have probably been more focused on clearing out your old home than what you will need once you arrive at your new one. Moving day is always busy and exhausting. The last thing you want to be doing when you’re tired is ripping open boxes trying to find items.

Don’t forget to keep these items close at hand.

Documentation

Keep any documentation related to the new or old house in a bright folder and next to your wallet and keys. Time is a precious commodity when relocating – you don’t want to have to be opening boxes searching for your moving contract or any other essential paperwork.

Pack a small overnight bag or suitcase

No matter how great your labelling skills may be, finding boxes with the right clothes during moving day madness may not be possible. Make sure you include at least one change of clothes for each member of your family, if not two.

Valuables

For peace of mind, keep all your precious items with you when you move. Whether it is jewellery, or something sentimental, you will feel better knowing it is safe. Also include important documents such as passports, car registration papers and medical records.

Toilet paper

We all know the importance of toilet paper – so throw a four-pack in the car ready to put into your new bathroom.

Basic toiletries

At the end of moving day, you will want (and need) a hot shower. So pack a special bag of essential items such as toothbrushes, tissues, deodorant, shampoo or soap in the car. Don’t forget to keep some towels separate – you don’t want to have to search for them in a box late at night.

Tools

A small toolkit containing a utility knife, scissors, screwdriver, Allen keys and a hammer can be a lifesaver when reassembling furniture and beds. Try and video yourself dismantling items – this can be invaluable in putting them back together.

Cleaning supplies

No matter how clean your new property is when you move in, you will want to clean it again to make it yours. Some helpful items include paper towels, wipes, surface spray, sanitiser, window cleaner, toilet brush, loads of cleaning rags and sponges. It is also a good idea to take the vacuum cleaner with you instead of with the removalist.

Eating essentials

We are not just talking about water and snacks to get you through the move. If your utilities haven’t been turned on yet at your new home, you will need to take some bottled water. Keep out some plates, forks, spoons, a few cups, mugs and of course, the kettle. Pick up some basics such as eggs, cereal, milk and bread on-route.

Electronic chargers

After a day of moving, your mobile phone and other important devices may be low on power. So make sure you keep the charges close by should you need to ring your real estate agent or maybe pizza delivery.

Bedtime supplies

When packing your removalist boxes, be sure to create one labelled ‘first night’. Load it up with sheets, pillows and blankets for each bed. You could also include some PJs in there. Don’t forget your kids’ favourite sleep toy. This will also make them feel secure spending their first night in new surroundings.

Kids toys and games

Youngsters may not be as excited as everyone else about setting up the new home. This is not the time to fret about screen time. Charge up those devices and download movies or games. Empty moving boxes or bubble wrap can be a lot of fun.

Give the kids crayons, textas or sticky tape and let their imagination run wild with some of your discarded packaging. You might be able to recruit older kids to help out with a few jobs – especially if you are paying some pocket money.

Medical kit

Be sure to have a first aid kit on standby and to pack any prescription medications.

Day of the move

Say goodbye to your old home

Take time to farewell your old home before things get too busy. Children, in particular, need closure. Walk through the property, recall fun memories and talk about all the fun you’ll have in your new place.

Work with your movers

Assist your movers by identifying fragile or large items right away. Supervise – without being intrusive – as they load everything into the truck. You will be signing off to confirm everything has been completed, so you need to be sure.

Final Check

Before the movers drive off, do one last check through the property to make sure you haven’t missed anything. Take one final look around before walking out the door. It’s very normal to feel emotional about moving house. Then switch your thoughts to your new property and starting the next chapter in your life.

Unpacking After A Move: Tips For Being Organised

Unpacking After A Move Tips For Being Organised

Unpacking After A MoveTips For Being Organised

Unpacking after a move requires just as much effort as the packing beforehand, but it’s well worth it as it’s a great time to create a wonderful space to become your new family home. After A Move Tips For Being Organised

So fear not! We’ve got several tips to help you figure out how to unpack after a move, how to keep your unpacking process stress-free and help you get organised and settle in quickly at your new home…

TOP TIPS FOR UNPACKING AFTER A MOVE

1. Walkthrough your house with your removal company before they leave

Before you start unpacking make sure to do a walkthrough with the removals company crew leader before they leave.

Check if everything is in the place you want it, that nothing obvious is missing and have them double check everything is unloaded from the back of the van. Ask them to take away any packing materials that you’ve already unpacked with them if you have them available before they depart.

Check to ensure everything has arrived intact

Accidents can happen, so it’s important to check all your packages, especially valuable items, quickly to ensure they have arrived in the same condition they left. Most insurance policies will have a time limit for notification of claims, for example, 7 days from delivery. If you discover any damage, take photos and make sure to keep hold of the item in case it has to be inspected.

2. Where to start with unpacking? Get the basics set up first.

If you packed an essentials box and loaded this last, then now is a great time to unpack it.

Kitchen

First up, get a basic kitchen set up to help keep you fed and watered. Kettle, cups and teabags, cutlery and plates for that first night take away!

Cleaning

Once you’ve got a simple kitchen set up, unpack your basic cleaning kit. This means you can quickly clean any areas you need to before unpacking your essentials in (wiping kitchen cabinets out, for example).

Bedtime basics

Next up get the basics set up for sleep. Assemble the beds, get the bedding on and find your toothbrush and pyjamas so you can quickly collapse at the end of what has likely been a long day.

3. Move on to tackle one room at a time

Once you’ve unpacked the basics, it’s a good idea to work on a room at a time, starting with the rooms you want to use most quickly, for example, setting up a comfortable living room or dining area.

You don’t have to unpack everything, but set it up to the extent you can use it for the first few days. Everything else that’s not needed urgently can stay boxed until you’ve decided exactly how you want to arrange the furniture or whether any decorating is required.

Flat pack your boxes once empty and get rid of the used packing material as you go to give you more space.

TOP TIP: The key to good unpacking is good packing – clear labelling, decluttering before the move and making a plan of where you’d like each item to go so the movers can unload into the right room can really help you get a head start.

4. Think about the children

Moving is an unsettling time for children in particular, so make sure unpacking their bedrooms takes priority over yours to help them settle in quickly.

Let older kids get started with unpacking their own bedrooms if they want to or give younger ones some choice in where their favourite items might go in their room.

If you can, try and keep to their normal bedtimes. If you can’t, then perhaps think about leaving them with friends or family for the day/night and getting their rooms set up with beds and toys first thing the next day so it’s all ready for their return. Our articles on moving house with children explain more about how to keep moving day as stress-free as possible for them.

5. Set up the bathroom when you can

Much like the kitchen, the bathroom will be a room required by each member of the family almost immediately.

Make sure you keep some fresh towels and toiletries in your essentials box so that people can use the shower or bath straight away – and don’t forget things like toothpaste, toothbrushes and toilet paper!

6. Dispose of packing materials as you go

A great tip for being organised when unpacking is to dispose of each box as it’s emptied.

Flatten them down and keep them out of the way – not only does it create more space and make it feel like you’re making progress, but it also prevents you from refilling it with other things that you’ll just have to unpack again later!

7. Don’t rush unpacking

The key to being organised when unpacking after a move is, simply, to take your time.

Once all of your essentials are up and running and you can eat, sleep and wash, the rest can be done at your own pace. Always leave things like books, pictures and ornaments until last, just in case you have to redecorate and things need to be moved all over again.

If your boxes are clearly labelled, then you shouldn’t have any trouble finding what you need when you need it, and can enjoy organising your new house and finding just the right place for all of your things!

Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

If you’re moving house and handling your own packing, then some items like china plates and bowls can be tricky. Here we show you what packing materials you will need and how to pack plates and bowls to make sure they are well protected during your move…Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

HOW TO PACK PLATES AND BOWLS FOR MOVING HOUSE

To pack your plates and bowls sufficiently to protect them during a house move you will need:

  • packing paper
  • packing tape
  • marker pen

Take a look at our guide to packing boxes and materials to find out more about which boxes you’ll need for loading your plates and bowls alongside the rest of your kitchen items.

Instructions

  1. Start by stacking your packing paper neatly on top of your packing station, which should be flat, stable and around waist height.
  2. Take the first plate and place it to one side of the paper. Fold one sheet of your packing paper over the top, then place the next plate on top.
  3. Fold another sheet over this plate, then place another plate on top of that.
  4. Repeat the process until you have a stack of around 4 plates.
  5. Tuck the paper neatly around the plates so that they form a bundle, turn them over, then take a couple of separate sheets of paper and wrap again.
  6. You should end up with a neat, compact bundle of plates that are well protected.
  7. When placing inside the box, ensure they are stacked on their side – this will minimise any impact damage should the box be accidentally dropped or knocked in transit.
  8. Mark your box as ‘fragile’ and indicate that the contents include plates or items of china so that a) your removal crew are fully aware of the contents when loading the truck and b) it’ll be much easier for you to unpack when you get into your new home as you’ll know what’s inside the box.

Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

stuff everywhere and you’re just wishing you knew where to start. Ain’t moving fun? With the right removalist on your team and a detailed moving items checklist in your hands, you’re well on your way to making an exciting new start.

Why do you need to sort items when moving house?

You may think it will be more efficient to sort and declutter your household items when you’re at the unpacking stage; however, that day might not ever come. How many times have you heard your friends or family tell you that they still have unopened boxes from their move months ago?  Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

Ideally, have all your items sorted and organised well before your moving date. This not only saves you money as removalists typically quote on the size of the moving truck required but on moving day, the removalist team can more effectively pack the truck and manoeuvre in and around your items as they will be able to see exactly what is included.

What items can removalists include when you move?

Whether you are moving items interstate or looking for a moving company in Brisbane, your chosen mover can help relocate almost everything with ease. Clothing, indoor and outdoor furniture, electricals, prints and all of your favourite knick-knacks.

What items cannot be moved by removalists?

Whilst the list of items a removalist can assist with is extensive, it is important you are aware of what a moving company will not touch. Typically, this includes hazardous materials, including but not limited to:

  •  Flammable items
  •  Explosives
  •  Corrosive chemicals
  •  Hazardous materials
  •  Perishable items
  •  Live animals/pets

What can you leave behind when you move house?

The only personal items you should consider leaving behind when you move house are items you’ve discarded in a well-overdue declutter. Other than that, handy items including leftover house paint, owner’s manuals, curtains and fixtures and fittings which form part of your contract of sale must remain in your home.

Do movers require everything in boxes?

It is common to use moving boxes to pack our prized possessions. There are plenty of alternate options, including using suitcases with wheels and plastic storage hampers. Remember, not everything needs to be in a box. Removalists will always have plenty of protective blankets to use for large, heavy or bulkier items, including your washing machine and dryer, fridge, cabinets and other furniture. Leave these up to the removalist experts.

What to look out for when using a moving company

If you are looking for an affordable mover in Brisbane that will not only safely transport your items affordably but also assist with packing and unpacking, plus provide temporary and long-term storage should that be required, contact All Purpose Removals and Storage. Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

Relieve yourself of one extra concern on moving day and leverage off a team that can provide the necessary boxes and packing materials and guide you on the big day. Armed with a checklist and a reliable moving company, the transition to your new home will be as seamless as possible.

The Complete Guide To Removals

The Complete Guide To Removals

Removal services can vary from local, regional, interstate or inter-country, and international. Some movers can offer specific services only for furniture, plant, rubbish, or home appliance removals while some include them in their main services. There may also be removal types based on seasonality. Other removal services may also include premoval for a house sale, office relocation, commercial storage, packing and unpacking, and moving boxes and supplies. The Complete Guide To Removals

Before you make a final decision and schedule your move, here are some quick tips you can follow:

Have a Checklist of All Items to Include

Sorting items from valuables to those for disposal can help lessen your stress before the day of the move. Make an inventory of items from clothes, fragile items, furniture, appliances, plants, tools, and rubbish.

Have Your Correct and Updated Address Ready

Providing your correct and updated address is essential in terms of considering moving cost, travel distance and duration, and having the right destination for all your belongings.

Learn More About Removalist Costs or Hourly Rates

Some moving companies may have a fixed rate for certain location points while some may apply hourly rates, especially if the move happens locally and will not take so much time. Whatever the case is, it is important to know which cost applies and be ready for it.

Check Removal Coverage Areas and Package Inclusions

If you are moving within the same suburb, you need not struggle much in finding a local removalist as most of them can be found in Google My Business or other listings. Some may also have social media pages you can contact easily. However, when moving interstate or regional, you may have to look for an experienced mover who can travel anywhere within Queensland or Australia.

Learn What Customers Say About Them

Social proof can be a make or break other than pricing. Of course, you want to entrust all your home or office belongings to a moving company that knows how to handle them properly, listens to and understands their customers and has years of experience.

Check Their Terms and Conditions

Some customers end up frustrated upon learning that a moving company will not cover a particular item in the move or will not be liable for any damaged items. Before you have that long face, be sure to read the removal company‘s terms and conditions and they can be agreed on based on your needs.

Pack Your Things and Book Your Move in Advance

Everything done early saves you from all anxiety when you need to move to a new office or house. It is a lot easier for removalists to collect your belongings when you have them prepared in advance. In any event that you cannot attend to packing all your stuff, then you can also count on other movers to do the job for you. This can be a get-and-go process.  Booking your move a month before can also save you moving costs and avoid incurring other fees.

The Bottom Line

Determining who to hire for a house or office removal may entail some considerations in terms of price, service inclusions, customer experience level, and others.

Best Packing Materials

The Best Packing Materials For Fragile Items

Lots of homeowners worry about expensive and sentimental items getting broken when they’re moving home, and unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon for accidents to happen on moving day. One of the best ways to ensure your fragile items make it to your new home in one piece is to pack them correctly. Using the right packing materials and taking your time when packing can make a big difference, and even if your move is last-minute, you shouldn’t rush your packing.

You may want to consider booking a packing service if you have lots of delicate and breakable items, and an expert team will ensure that everything is professionally packed for you. They know the best ways to pack fragile items and they will use the high-quality packing materials required to keep your belongings safe. If you’re wondering which packing materials you should use for fragile items, below we have listed some that we consider essential.

Bubble Wrap

Whenever you’re packing belongings for a house move, bubble wrap is a must-have. This protective material is ideal to wrap around your fragile items and the air pockets in bubble wrap will act as a cushion whilst your items are in transit. Bubble wrap can help to absorb shock and prevent your fragile items from getting damaged when the removal van goes over speed bumps or potholes too. Don’t be afraid to use generous amounts of bubble wrap to keep expensive and sentimental items safe during your move.

Packing Paper

Similarly to bubble wrap, packing paper is great to wrap your fragile items in when you’re moving home and it will help to ensure they get from A to B in one piece. Lots of homeowners will also use packing paper to fill empty spaces in their boxes to prevent items from moving around in transit. Packing paper is usually a cost-effective option and it’s relatively cheap to buy. Of course, packing paper is fully recyclable too, so if you have a lot of fragile items, this is a more environmentally friendly protective material.

Strong Cardboard Boxes

Lots of homeowners will use old cardboard boxes from local shops when they’re packing for a house move in an attempt to save money. Whilst these boxes are okay for general day-to-day items, you shouldn’t put your fragile items in them. There’s a high chance that these flimsy cardboard boxes will break at some point during your move and this can result in everything inside them getting broken too. It’s worthwhile purchasing a few high-quality, strong cardboard boxes for your expensive and sentimental items.

Fragile Packing Tape

Even if you plan to label all of your boxes, which is recommended by packing experts, you should still use fragile packing tape for boxes containing easily breakable items. It will be much easier for your removal team to see which boxes they need to handle with extra care when you use traditional fragile tape and this tape can help to prevent any accidents. It’s a common misconception that fragile packing tape is expensive, but it won’t cost much more than standard packing tape, so it’s worth getting a roll or two.

Negotiating With Removal Companies

Negotiating With Removal Companies

Negotiating With Removal Companies

Negotiating on services has become increasingly popular, and is a topic often heard discussed by removal companies. If you’re thinking about negotiating with removal companies prior to your move it’s therefore important to know all the facts beforehand in order to make sure you’re negotiating safely to guaruantee your move runs smoothly and no vital corners are cut…

First things first: decent, ethical Removal Companies membership gives a good indication of professional practices) will NOT be trying to “rip you off”. They do not make their first price high to allow lots of room to come down when you negotiate. The likelihood is they have given you a fair price to cover the costs of your move plus their profit (remember, they are not a non-profit organisation – they are a business). Those that ARE trying to rip you off are not likely to be able to do this through over pricing a good service because in a competitive market it’d be very rare anyone would pay it and they’d soon have to adjust to book any work at all. More likely is they will rip you off by under servicing your move for what you are paying (e.g. hiring inexperienced or unqualified staff, less thorough packing, not leaving enough time) or worse hiding additional charges that will crop up on the day.

When to negotiate with removal companies:

If you feel that you have been given a better price from a company that would not be your first choice (if price weren’t involved) and it is for the exact same service then you should ask your first choice mover if they are willing to review their price. This is a great example of when negotiating with removal companies can work for you, if the circumstances are right.

How to negotiate with removal companies:

If you are going to do this then you have to be prepared to be completely open with the information you have. Tell your first choice mover you want to move with them but you believe you are being offered the same service cheaper elsewhere. Be prepared to tell them which company is beating their price and also be prepared to send them a copy of your quote – they will want to help you assess if it is a like-for-like quotation and to point out any reasons why they might be more expensive before they determine if they can offer you any discount.

What are your bargaining chips when negotiating with removal companies?

If the first price you are given is too high then don’t be afraid to go back to your removal company to discuss. It may be that you’ve asked for a quote that includes services you weren’t sure if you wanted because you didn’t know the cost yet. It’s fine to go back and say that, actually, based on these costs I’d like to not have my packing done for me, or can you re-adjust for me to remove some of my items from the list as I will get rid of some before I move.

Can you change your method of moving? If you have a smaller consignment then asking for a part load or Groupage service can cut your costs as you will share some transport costs with other customers – just be aware you may have to be flexible on moving dates, but if this is less important to you than the cost then this is a great place to try to reduce your costs when negotiating with removal companies.

What to do before negotiating with removal companies – things to check:

Whilst the ‘move cost’ is the biggest chunk of the quotation, make sure to add in any extra costs to the comparison. Insurance, for example, is something you need to add in to the overall price. Insurance will usually be as a % of your move cost or as a % of your value of goods. Work out what this additional cost is and then compare the total against other companies quoting. Ensure you are comparing the same type of insurance products – i.e. in the UK is it extended liability or goods in transit and for overseas moves what is covered and what’s not (eventualities and items). What does this charge do to the gap?

If any part of your move involves storing items what are the company offering? Many international moves for example include a period of free storage – have you factored this into your comparison against another removal company?

EXAMPLE: Recently we helped a customer of ours compare his options when he came back to negotiate as he was planning on instantly dismissing us for being 30% higher than two other local companies. On closer inspection neither were BAR members, both had heavily under staffed the move having ignored the fact it was a 2nd floor flat, and both had mis-represented the insurance they were offering (Extended Liability rather than the Goods in Transit policy we were offering) – and even more worryingly neither had confirmed in writing their price or what it covered, so no physical contract was drawn up.

We’re not saying this happens all the time, but in this instance it was no surprise that we were more expensive – the customer would’ve found themselves likely stung with additional charges or extra stress on moving day. So, in conclusion, if you are comfortable negotiating to get the removal company you prefer for the price you prefer then don’t be afraid to do so – but make sure you consider the tips provided before you do.
